Sir Malcolm Arnold, CBE (21.10.1921 – 23.09.2006) English composer from Northampton, UK. Youngest of 5 children and after seeing Louis Armstrong play, he took up the trumpet aged 12 and 5 years later won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music

Studied composition with Gordon Jacob & trumpet with Ernest Hall. 1941 he joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra, as second trumpet & became principal trumpet in 1943

After a year as principal trumpet with the BBC Symphony Orchestra he returned to the London Philharmonic in 1946 staying until 1948 when he left to become a full-time composer. His works include a cycle of 9 symphonies, numerous concertos, concert works, chamber music, choral music & music for brass band & wind band. He wrote extensively for the theatre, with 5 commissioned ballets by the Royal Ballet, as well as 2 operas and a musical & over 100 film scores including The Bridge on the River Kwai which won him an Oscar
