Carrow Works Band was based in Norwich, England and was active between 1870 and at least 1913.

It was sponsored by the mustard makers Colman's. This company was a champion of new technology and installed the first private telephone line between his works in Norwich and the London office in Canon Street.

In February 1878 Charles Noble, seen here c1893, principal cornet with the band, played Gilbert and Sullivan's '...Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes...' down the telephone line to London, where a live audience gathered around the receiver. He was almost certainly the first bandsman to make a live broadcast. In this picture c1893 is the band’s principal cornet player Charles Noble.

In 1873 the band took second prize at the brass band section of the National Music Meeting at the Crystal Palace.

Some important information for you..... This week I closed my Sunday Bandstand Facebook page down which will also mean it does not get onto the other 15 Facebook brass band pages - apologies for that. However, owing to a difficult experience with Facebook has forced me to make this decision. The Mixcloud link you receive direct from me and not through Facebook will I assure all listeners be continuing. In fact my new website which has been in preparation for a while now is well on the way to being completed. Once it is ready enough to go live I will be circulating the website everywhere.

This week's second hour musical theme is based on the ocean, sea, ships, boats and ship building - hence this week's illustration.

As always enjoy the programme and don't forget the show is always open to requests and questions about the world of brass bands.............Best Wishes .......Chris
