A day to remember 70 years ago at Clifton

A day to remember 70 years ago at Clifton

Here is a photograph taken in 1948 on the occasion of the Clifton Methodist Church Sunday School anniversary. A happy day for all concerned on this special day.

The photograph was loaned to me this weekand and with some help from Clifton author Margaret Sharp and a January 1983 newspaper cutting from my files I am able to name everyone on the photograph. With everyone standing as a large group the list of names are in no particular order.

Starting at the back with the man on the top step that is Mr John Jackson, former hurrier in mine and the others are: Douglas Quarmby, Gordon Firth, Donald France, Trevor Nicholson, Fred Nicholson, Brian Rukin, Malcolm Whitaker, Jack Bray, Maurice Rukin, Tom Dixon, Donald Helliwell, Shirley Clay, Hazel Ibbotson OR Ibberson?, Margaret Clay, David Smith, Miss Ada Hopper (in charge of Sunday School), Joyce France, Betty France, Ann Field, Roslyn Shaw, Sheila Crowther, Joyce Nicholson, Jean Nicholson, Christine Nicholson, Hilary Whitaker, Tony Rukin, Anne Holgate, Ann Gilroy, John Souch, Robert Riley, Geoffrey Lancaster, John Grundy, John  Dixon, Maria Habergham, Sylvia Dixon and Miss Mary Jones (organist).

What a surprise to find this when I was rooting through old Brighouse stuff online.
A few names leapt out at me, several of which were at the same school as me. They are Anne Field, a special friend of mine who was fondly nicknamed Keyhole Kate, a Dandy or Beano character, I can’t remember which, Rosalyn Shaw, Betty France and Shirley Clay. I winder where they all are now?
Jack Bray is another name which is very familiar. I remember him acting as dame in several pantomimes at Park Church - now Wetherspoons, and Sheila Crowther who worked as shop assistant in our local, bakery. She was also a beautiful soprano singer. She had a sister who married Jack Bray and she was a contralto singer.
You may remember me Chris, Mary Gelder, now in Cyprus who was once a Brigusser as Mary Sharp.
Sadly my sister Christine died in March and is now at peace in Brighouse Cemetery.
