The photograph shows all the children who took part in the fancy dress competition, which for judging purposes was assembled in The Grove. My records do not show who won or who was the lucky person to have judged this event. However, I do remember being asked to judge a similar event once, and once was enough. Mothers who on the one hand give you smiles in the hope their child would win and there were others who gave you looks that were almost threatening. You had to establish which if any of the children were related, two prizes in the same family and I would need a fast car to get me away down Denholmegate Road, if I had been the one judging this event.
The programme I have shows a lot of support from local businesses, who both sponsored some of the events or advertised in the programme. Looking through the list of advertisers it is interesting to see who has moved on in the last 32 years.
Peter Manning, of course, Peter is still around but is well retired from his well-established newsagent's. John Kitson and Son, the family butcher and his son who in later years moved on from the butchery trade into fish and chips at the corner of George Street. Mr and Mrs Lawton, who had the greengrocers; Tony Morley and his wife, had the fish and game shop and Steve Nichols, who was in the world of insurance for many years – all these have either retired.
Then there was 'Lightquiffs', the hairdresser’s shop which was established in what some may recall from an earlier generation as Nellie Wood’s chip shop in Wakefield Road. The shop is now back where it started selling food under the name of Mrs B’s sandwich shop. Many other businesses that have supported local events over the years have also either moved on to pastures new or the comforting chair of retirement.
The chairman of the organising committee was the late Norman Lister and after thanking all those who helped to put the event together, the generous support of all the sponsors and for all those taking part in this wonderful community event. He led the rallying call ‘Roll up and Support the Community Fair’.
A similar event was held in 1990, We are now 30 years on since that event, I think some may ask the question could or would it ever be repeated in the future, only time will tell.
