Brighouse Police Station, Bradford Road opens 1964

Light, spacious and quiet is how Brighouse's new sub-divisional police station was described after it had been built over 1963 and into 1964. It finally opened in March 1964. Situated about a half mile from the town centre, it is situated at Thornhill Briggs, at the junction with Bradford Road and Woodvale Road. It is modern in appearence which is vastly different than the old Police Street (now Lawson Road) station.

This new building has a brick and wood outward appearence, it is mainly a single storey structure, though in part it is two-storey. There are large windows in all the rooms - even the smallest where the windows are in the roof.

In the general office the centre of the ceiling is raised and windows make up the whole of the raise wall. The cells have windows of special glass. Large rooms, with smaller ones for specified people, ensure that the personnel are never on top of one and another.

Although the station is situated so near to the main road, traffic noises are not as noticeable as in the old premises in Police Street. One reason is the double door into the entrance hall, another is the ceiling material which is designed to deaden sound as well as retain the heat.

This year will be the 60th anniversary of the Bradford Road police station opening.
