I am enjoying your Sunday Bandstand broadcasts, but the one that stood out for me was this Master Brass Series Episode 2, not because the standard of playing was any different from the others, but because of several famous names in the brass band world which brought back many happy memories.
It is always a great delight to listen to Jim Shepherd. I was particularly interested when you talked about his first solo contest in North Seaton when he prayed in church.
The only time our paths crossed was also in North Seaton, when we both took part in the First Annual Solo & Quartet Contest, on Sat 2nd March 1957, organised by North Seaton Workmen’s Band. The adjudicator was Herbert Sutcliffe,
The Open Solo class was won by George Gilmour, one of Scotland’s finest trombone players, and 1st Trombone in Barry,Ostlere & Shepherd ‘s famous trombone quartet, which won many competitions, including 10 Scottish Quartet Championships in succession, as well as several British titles. It was no surprise when they won the Quartet class by 11 points from Wheatley Hill No 1.
In the Solo class, George beat me by 1 point. 3rd place went to J Shepherd, and 4th to D Carr.

    Happy memories.
