Joseph Horovitz (b: 26 May 1926 in Vienna, Austria) is a British composer & conductor. His Jewish family emigrated to England in 1938 to escape the Nazis. He studied music and modern languages at New College, Oxford, and later attended the Royal College of Music in London, studying composition with Gordon Jacob.

He was subsequently active as a conductor of ballet and opera, touring Europe and the USA. His works include 16 ballets, including Alice in Wonderland (1953), 2 one-act operas (The Dumb Wife and Gentlemen’s Island). Along with concertos for violin, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, euphonium, tuba and percussion, as well as a popular and often performed jazz concerto for harpsichord or piano.

He has written a number of pieces for brass bands including '...Ballet for Band...' in 1983. This work is featured on this show as it is the 1st Section National Final test piece in September 2016 at Cheltenham. On this track he is the conductor.
